Tala braced herself as she opened the door to their unit, not knowing if Kane would be there or not. She wasn’t sure where he’d stormed off to. The Village wasn’t that big, he’d only have so many places to go, and she wouldn’t put it past him to go up top either. But as she stepped inside, the door quickly closing behind her, he was coming out of the bathroom, his body wet from a shower. Her eyes went to the new ink on his arm. She felt a thrill at seeing him standing there in just a towel.

But this wasn’t the time for that.

She was mad at him.

He gave her a half-smile, sadness in his eyes.

His outburst had been both embarrassing and infuriating, but standing in front of him now, she couldn’t help but remember every reason why she loved him. But it broke her heart that he didn’t seem to have the same faith in her that everyone else did. She couldn’t understand how he didn’t see why she had to do this. Why she had to go back to the Republic.

Without a word, he dressed, his t-shirt clinging to his chest where his skin was still damp, and he made his way to the sofa. Tala crossed the room, taking only a few strides in their small unit, and took a seat beside him, though she kept a small space between them.

“I feel like I’m saying this a lot lately,” he said, his voice low and gruff. “But I’m sorry.”

Tala pursed her lips as she looked at him, meeting his eyes, those dark eyes with their tiny fleck of gold in his irises.

“I was completely out of bounds back there,” he said.

“I feel like you’re the only person who doesn’t think I can do this,” she said as she struggled to keep her voice even. She was torn between so many emotions.

“I can see how you’d feel that way,” he said with a nod. “But the anger and hatred you’re carrying around with you scares me a little. I worry that your need for revenge compromises your objectivity.”

“It’s not revenge that I want,” though she knew that wasn’t entirely true, “it’s justice. Justice for the people Thias hurt, for the people he oppresses. Justice for you. I know it wasn’t Thias who did all those experiments on you, but it was a corrupt Republic, and I can’t live with that. If there’s something I can do to bring about change, don’t you think that it’s my responsibility to do it? No matter how hard it is?”

“It’s not your job to fight everyone’s fight—”

“But I’m not. I’m just a part of the catalyst,” she said, stiffness in her voice.

“Desperation can lead even the strongest people into some pretty dark places, and I don’t want that for you. The truth?” he asked. She could tell he was trying to keep his emotions in check.
